Jana Revedin
Jana Revedin, Prof. Arch. PhD, born 1965 in Constance (D), studied architecture and urban planning in Buenos Aires, Princeton and Milan and taught at the University of Venice where she submitted her doctorate on the role of public space in the development of a democratic civic identity. The UNESCO sustainability expert is a full professor for architecture and design at Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden. In her work as the UNESCO delegate on the research and teaching commission of the International Union of Architects (UIA) she campaigns for a paradigm change in the self-image of her profession.
Alongside her internationally award-winning architectural and urban design projects Jana Revedin devotes herself to the support of and networking among pioneers and groundbreaking talents in the area of sustainable design: In 2005 the European Commission appointed her to lead the first student competition for sustainable architecture (gau:di), whose winners she then exhibited at the Biennale in Venice. In 2007 she established the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture™, which is awarded annually to five architect colleagues and in 2009 she established the non-profit LOCUS Foundation, which supports research into sustainable design processes and tests these in experimental urban renewal projects.
The winner of the 2014 UN Habitat prize and the award for “teaching excellence” from Europe’s universities of urban planning, a French Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres and the author of standard works in the area of sustainable architecture Jana Revedin researches her “radicant” participatory design theory while using such interdisciplinary self-development concepts as her “Light for the Slums” project in Cairo to show how design “with the people by the people” is both feasible and scalable.
